How long does a mortgage application stay on your credit file? >>

If SO and I both apply for a mortgage together, and we don't get it, can he apply alone straight away? Or will there be a mark or something on his file?

Only a search is left behind when you apply for a mortgage.

However, if you apply jointly and you currently have no joint financial accounts or commitments, the search will create an association which may cause him problems if he then applies alone soon after.

If you do make a joint application and are declined, it would then be advisable to go through the disassociation process with all three credit reference agencies to sever the connection the search created.

This is essential if one partner has adverse credit visible on their credit files.

TBH you'd best seek out an independent mortgage advisor with all three of your credit files and not make any speculative joint applications direct to lenders.
