Some ways you earned a bit of extra money to pay off those bills!

What are some things you do to earn a bit of extra money? We've put stuff on eBay and in the paper, but other than that I'm a bit clueless. I've read through conversations and got an idea, but I'd just like to see what everyone does. We've got some debts I'd like to pay off.

My back story if you want to know: My husband is in full time work and I am in part time. I'm going back to school part time and the course requires me to volunteer or work (paid) with children. I'm going to volunteer one day a week, then I'll be applying for some full time jobs when I'm in the course. I'm going to look into another part time job when the course starts, I just don't want to overwhelm myself.

    Hi,

Ebay is one of the best ways to earn extra money. It's handy to combine with other hobbies. For instance, I make silver jewellery and sell it on Ebay, along with unwanted things.

You could also spend your spare time scanning for good bargains, then when you've received the item (and a certain amount of time has elapsed) list it for more. Some people also buy stuff from second hand shops and charity shops and list it on ebay (not taking either side of the moral fence on that one).

My husband and I read a lot of books, so we bag up the ones we no longer want and take them to the second hand bookshop in exchange for credit or cash. The best books though I hold out to list on Ebay.

We also get points from pigsback.com and convert them into vouchers (for boots/bookstore/restaurants/mobile phone credit etc). You can also earn extra points through competitions and things. We've won the pigsback daily quiz (Ireland) 3 times.

I signed up to a survey site and rpoints, but I don't really seem able to get many points off those.

That's about it really. I know other people here use sites like quidco (I think it's quidco.co.uk) and survey sites.

Other sites I've heard of that might be useful are e-bid, amazon and greenmetropolis (for selling uwanted books) and gumtree, which has free ads.

    - fruit picking
    - Littlewoods customer services
    - Factory work
    - sticking free gifts on magazine covers and putting leaflets in "loot"
    - packing bounty packs and nappy samples for Bounty
    - data processing at home
    - typing theses for students
    - winding transformers
    - phone/charity market research
    - bar work
    - reception work at ski club
    - mystery shopping
    - hired out bouncy castles
    - decorated wedding receptions with helium balloons

I am sure I have done more, so may add to this later!

Hypno - you've gone 21 days without chocolate (not counting 4 maltesers)? What a horrible thought. Why would you want to do a thing like that?

Chocolatechipcookies: Considering that you're going to be working with children, could you try childminding/babysitting part time?

I don't know if you need any qualifications to do that in the UK, but one of my former neighbours in Australia used to look after about 5 kids after school for extra money.
