Hi wondered if anyone could help me with this :)I work in retail, at the moment i work one week mon - fri and have sat and sun off and the next week i work mon - sat and have tues and sat off. Anyway someone new is starting on my department and they want tues off aswell which means the manager wants to change my day off to thursday. Can they do this without my consent or is it up to me?Thanks

It would depend what your contract says.
Most full-time (5/7) retail contracts state that you are required to work 5 out of 7 days, rather than set days. If that's what your contract says, then yes they can change the days you work.
If your contract specifies days you work then they can't move them without you signing a new contract.
It does seem pretty rank that they're trying to move your shifts to suit someone else though - have you asked why?"Facism arrives as your friend. It will restore your honour, make you feel proud, protect your house, give you a job, clean up the neighbourhood, remind you of how great you once were, clear out the venal and the corrupt, remove anything you feel is unlike you... [it] doesn't walk in saying, "our programme means militias, mass imprisonments, transportations, war and persecution."0 -

the reason is because im the only person who has a tuesday off on that department and the new person needs a tuesday off too.How lucky am I to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard - Winnie the Pooh0 -
Have you asked why the other person's need of a Tuesday off outweighs your own?"Facism arrives as your friend. thats not true to be fair, you cannot refuse somebody a job for wanting the same day off as another employee. That said, I think it is important to why that person wants the day off.
If its for childcare or something that has a genuine need then the employer has to be considerate of this. Why do you have a Tuesday off - do you have a genuine need or is it just what you have got used to?I am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a Mortgage Adviser, so you need to take my word for it. It probably is for childcare reasons she does have a child. I dont have children and the only reason i need to have Tuesday off is that its a day when i catch up with my friend who has the same day off as me.How lucky am I to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard - Winnie the Pooh0 -
I appreciate that it can be frustrating what has happened and that it will not seem fair to be asked to move a day when you have been there longer.
However, looking at it from an employers view, if they cannot manage with 2 people off on the same day, then they have to work it as best as they can and fully consider the flexibility required for all employees and if the contract permits them to dictate what days you have off then you will not have much say in it.
Is there another day your friend can have off to keep this nice arrangement up? I know its not fair for you to ask your friend but it maybe something they can do and you will not feel as hard done to knowing you can still see your friend.I am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a Mortgage Adviser, so you need to take my word for it. its OK - I am a very reflective mood tonight..
Have you ever read a book called "who moved my cheese?" A great little read about change - I hear that following Fridays are better days off anyway - you can have a 3 day weekend every other week that way!!!I am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a Mortgage Adviser, so you need to take my word for it.
