Is it worth paying a salon rather than a normal haircut shop?

May I ask for your advice?

For a man, is it worth paying expensive fee at a salon for a new haircut?

For example, I saw that the minimum price for a man's haircut at a nearby salon is £45, while you can pay £8 at a normal shop.

Has anyone tried it and think it is good to pay a salon?

Thank you

I would say just pay the normal price really, my partner gets a style at his local barbers and pays £10!

Not male, but I did try an expensive haircut once, at a trendy salon to see if it made any difference. I honestly don't think it was worth the extra money, and have had better haircuts elsewhere for less than half the price. I think it is about finding a good hairdresser (or barber in your case) rather than a swanky salon with all the bells and whistles. Apparently a lot of the hairdressers in the expensive salons are not very well paid either, despite the high prices they charge.

Salons are for the sort of person who ponces about a lot with their hair - and who will be in there regularly getting it ponced about.

If you're a regular bloke it'll look good for about 2 hours after you leave the salon ... and be marginally different (cut wise) for a few days/week at the most. By then you're back to doing with it what you used to do with it anyway.

So, on balance...... for most it's just poncy nonsense.

I think with a salon your likely to get a whole "experience", a massage at the hair washing stage, tea/coffee/whatever and possibly cakes, posh hair products and a babblingly happy stylist. I think if your bot bothered by all this, stick with what you already have otherwise pay extra for all the frills.

I used to hate the hairdressers and even as a woman I used to feel quite intimidated by those 'fancy' places and thought they would look down their nose at little old me and criticise my bad hair.

However, a few years back I decided I was worth it and fronted up in a fairly nice salon - yes they did look down their noses and made no secret of their horror at my multi-coloured home hair dye job but they soon fixed me up and made me feel a million dollars.

I am always surprised at the number of guys that come into the salon whilst I am there, some of them barely with any hair and I often wonder why they would go high-end and pay so much for a haircut but I guess they too must enjoy the full on 'experience'; from the reminder call to go, the high end products, the head massage, nice coffee, latest glossy magazines etc.

I love my salon and now look forward to going to the hairdressers; the cut, colour and condition of my hair is the best it has ever been. Even my OH noticed the difference in my hair and that's really saying something.

  • My husband goes to this ancient little barbershop with an equally ancient wee barber and pays £4. There is a worn out circle on the old fashioned parquet floor round the solitary chair!

He gives a good cut though. He's offered my "young man" eartrims and old fashioned razor shave but he took one look at his shaky hands and politely declined!
