Underwriter powers?

Hi all :) been reading these forums for a while now and its time for my first post! Ive currently got a mortgage application underway and I was wondering what powers the underwriters actually have? I know they can contact my work but can they contact other creditors directly?

In the broadest terms an underwriter is like God. In that they have the power to accept or decline your application. They'll have minions to do the leg work.

Lenders will base their decisions on credit data obtained from the Credit Reference Agencies, Trust Registry, National Hunters and their own internal records if you bank with them.

No they will not contact your creditors.
Even if they did, your creditors could not say anything due to data protection laws.

Why would they need/want to contact creditors? Any info they care about is most likely recorded at at least one CRA.
