I've never heard of the cancer thing, but I've read numerous times over the years that onions (and garlic) have natural antibiotic properties. Not that I need any encouragement - I've always thought that a kitchen is not properly equipped if you can't lay a hand on an onion in it somewhere

Ages ago I thought I was cooking with too much onions and/garlic, so I cut down on the amounts I used. Within a week both OH and I came down with awful colds. Have since gone back to about 3/4 of what I previously used - no colds!!!!

An old boy I used to work with many moons ago used to boil onions for his tea and he lived to a ripe old age.
I love onions especially home grown and they don't make you cry so much either.
