Car Finance Company cancelled their direct debit

Today I got a letter from car finance company asking me to phone them urgently stating they had been trying to contact me and my details must have change? So I checked the phone no was valid and called (10p a minute by the way) Apparently I had missed payments and needed to pay the missing months asap. I made it clear I had no idea of any missing payments and they said if I paid the outstanding balance as soon as possible it would be ok. I asked them to send out a new direct debit mandate so we could sort it that way. They said they did not need to do that and I should arrange with my bank to pay the outstanding balance. I said pay to what account and they said they could email the account details.
Despite giving my email address I have not received anything. I have called my bank and the bank confirmed the direct debit was cancelled by the recipient and that the direct debit has been reinstated under a new reference but for what amount or date the bank would not know till the first debit.
I have every intention to pay what I owe but I think I deserve a letter of explanation, and I do not like the inference I missed a payment. Had the finance company any right to reinstate the direct debit without telling me what they were doing? Could this effect my credit rating? I'll leave it a day or so to see if the email arrives and then I'll find email address by other means to contact them if not provided and email them, how should I go about it? Don't like rewarding companies with their phone charges when they mess up. Ps ive checked there's no scam involved.

    1) yes they can. You gave a DD mandate, you let them take what they want, when they want, as often as they want. Why does a mandate with a different reference number cause you so much grief.
    2) you remain in default EVEN if they don't rake any payment, the responsibility (legally) is always yours, you might want to check your credit file.
