Want to recycle cans need advice pls.

Hello all,

I have had the idea to recycle cans in my office at work. Currently "the lads" drink about 50-100 cans per week of coke, etc....

We dont have the bins to recycle them so i've been collecting them in bin bags next to my desk. Now i'm swamped with cans and bin bags.

I dont just want to recycle and give them to charity. If i can get something back to rid some of my major debt it would help. Do i create bins and boxes and then take them somewhere or are there places/comapnies i can turn to to make a few £'s out of all these cans.

I plan to recover all the cans from the whole office (2000) people if its worth my while.

let me know people.

Cheers

    I'm sure there's a place on Oldham Road in Manchester (slightly further out from town than Wing Yip Chinese Supermarket) that pays for cans, can't remember the name though

    There are companies who will buy aluminium cans.

    First you need to separate the steel cans from the aluminium ones.

    Usually they tell you with a recycle sign - 3 arrows in a triangle - with the letters Au, the perodiic table name.

    Otherwise use a magnet to find the steel from the aluminium. Magnet will stick to steel but not aluminium. Put the steel ones out for normal recycling as you will not get enough for the amount you would need to collect, basicallly it would be uneconomic.

    To save space you can crush the cans. They will stilll take them crushed as long as they are clean.

    Now the money side. The last I knew some companies would give you 45p for a kilo of cans ( approx 60 cans per kilo). Price will go up or down depending on market price.

    Used to know of one who would teavel around to certain points, usually supermarket car parks and buy the can.

    Can't remember the name of the company. Will try and find it or somebody else might.

  • :j Hi

    Dont waste time with magnets and trying to read the side of cans. If the can is Aluminium it will have a shiny bottom:eek: . Like it has been polished. If the can is Steel it will have a dull bottom:eek: like it needs a good polish. Much quicker than using magnets.

    Good Luck- we used to have can bins in our workplace, but they took them away because they attracted too many wasps....so make sure you have a decent lid on the bin?
