Whereabouts in the US do you travel to ? Check options across state lines- for example a jeweller in New Jersey is likely to offer a better price than one in Manhattan 20 minutes away.
You can claim the tax back on exit btw but there would also be a tax liability when you declared it entering the UK as you'd be importing above your tax free allowance.

Thanks - I travel to Austin Texas for work mainly!

When you get the sales tax back on exiting the US do they give you it straight away?

    Cheers

Why Birmingham? Is jewellery mostly cheaper there?

Compared to the high street then yes. The jewellery quarter is an area where there are a lot of independent jewellers who don't have the high overheads of a retail store and so much competition locally means they have to be very competitive on price.
  • At the moment my top option is this ring:
    http://www.adiamor.com/Engagement-Rings/Pave/Milgrain-and-Pave-Sapphire-Engagement-Setting/1320

With a 0.5 high quality diamond it's about £2,400 inc tax, however it oddly comes out at £1,500 when using the site in USD.

Due to this, I'll most likely buy it when I'm in America for work (which is often). It's a gift so bought in the US I don't think I need to worry about declaring it etc...

Will evaluate some other options - thanks for your advice people though! :)

Someone has thrown a spanner in the works due to a word I didn't know changed anything:

    Fluorescence..

Apparently Medium fluorescence diamonds are visibly worse than those with "none" and thus it's worth paying more.

So would a 0.5c with none be better than a 0.6c with medium?!
