Cancelling Sky

Afternoon all,

I'm moving house on the 28th of this month and wondering about cancellation of Sky TV.

As far as I'm aware, if you simply tell Sky you're moving they'll charge you to reinstall the kit at your new home. For that reason, I thought I would cancel my subscription and subscribe as a new customer once I was in my new home, hence, getting free installation/new box etc.

The moving date has been brought forward, so now when I cancel, giving 30 days notice, I'm obviously going to be paying for part of the month I won't actually use. What I'm wondering though is, because this 30 days will run into the next billing month, will I also have to pay for the whole of that month too? I'd phone and ask Sky but I don't necessarily trust them to give me a knowledgable or honest answer.

If I do have to pay for the following month am I best to give notice, then just before the new billing date downgrade to the most basic package so that the wasted month doesn't cost me as much?

What should I do for the best?

Thanks.

This is what Sky say on their website, I'd ring them and ask, you don't have to follow their advise but you may be pleasantly surprised.
If you’re moving home, all your existing equipment must be taken with you including:

    - Your Sky box
    - Your viewing card
    - Your Sky remote control
    - Any SCART leads
    - All internal cabling
    - tvLINK (if applicable)
    - Your Sky Broadband box
    - Your wireless adaptor(if applicable)
    - All Microfilters
    - All internal cabling.

Sky will supply a new dish, LNB and external cabling and fully reconnect your system. However, if there is an existing dish and cable at the property, the engineer may utilise any of the existing equipment. There may also be a charge for the new installation although there is a 90 day warranty on the dish and cabling.

You’ll need to call Sky to let us know you are moving home and to provide us with your new address. You are responsible for obtaining all consents required (e.g. landlord's consent) before installation. Please ensure that you have an active telephone line in your new property before the installation.

An additional installation charge will be payable by you to your engineer if your installation is not standard. You will be advised by your engineer about these charges before your satellite system and broadband is installed.

If you’re moving from the UK to the Republic of Ireland, or vice versa, you may experience some small differences in your viewing. However, you will still receive the same channels you previously subscribed to.

If you're moving outside the UK, Isle of Man, Channel Islands, Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland, we're sorry, but you won't be able to continue receiving Sky TV because the service is only available in the UK and ROI.

To discuss your move further, please contact us:

    - Complete our online form
    - UK Call 08702 40 64 84
    - ROI Call 0818 71 98 93

Thanks. I had seen that but it sounds a bit unclear as to what you will or won't be charged.

I'd like to be armed with more knowledge when I phone Sky!

if your new house already has a sky dish you can fit it yourself.

simply plug your box into the sky cable and it will work.

i have done this the past 3 times i have moved without a problem.

then call sky and tell them you have moved house.

    easy!!

if they insist on an engineer visit and the fees this will incurr simply tell them you are not willing to pay and that you would rather cancel.

funnily enough they will waive the fee!!
You got to get through what you've got to go through to get what you want but you got to know what you want to get through what you got to go through.
