My son only got half of his wages this month. The employer said the will be paid in a couple of days. It effects all employees. Can an employer do this?

I would imagine that as long as he is paid what he is owed, then they can pay him at whatever date within the month they choose.0

Would they have a duty to pay his bank charges for not being able to pay his direct debits?0 -
If they haven't got the money they can't hand it over. Unless there are mitigating circumstances it suggests financial problems that may mean looking for another job would be wise. As for the bank charges - morally maybe but legally probably not and I suspect if you go pushing for it, it may hasten the end of the employer anyway. As a general point things do go wrong sometimes with pay, and if its possible to leave some space between pay day and DD's going out it would be wise to do so.Adventure before Dementia!0

It really depends what his contract says about when he will be paid - if a set date is specified and doesn't include any room for manoeuvre then there would be a case to be made for payment of any charges incurred through delayed payment of wages. But if he kicks up a fuss without backing from his colleagues he may find himself at the front of the queue for cost cutting if the company is in financial difficulty.0
