Can they make her take holiday

A friend gave in her notice at work just over a week ago - she had to give 4 weeks notice. She was then off sick last week and on returning to work yesterday was told that she had to take the 2 weeks holiday she had accrued so far this year over the next 2 weeks from next Monday - in effect not returning to her work after this Friday. She had hoped to work her notice and then be paid for holiday owed when she left.

Can her employers make her do this?

Thank you in advance for your responses.

In short, yes they can. There is no automatic right to be paid for untaken holiday.

She's lucky, actually. In a lot of companies it's 'use it or lose it'.

Yes it can be use it or lose it if the holiday entitlement is more than the legal one - ie 4 weeks currently. However if someone leaves with holidays owing within the 4 week entitlement then they MUST be paid for it.

However, the employer can insist that holidays are taken as part of notice, so in this case, unless the 20 day entitlement wasn't exhausted, there will be no additional pay.
