If you are really struggling, there's beans, spaghetti, sardines, cheese etc. on toast, beans or cheese on baked potatoes, soup, stew, chips, and so on.

If worst comes to worst, there's always bread and cheese.

You can get an 827g block of cheese (to give an idea how much that is, it's about 7" x 3.5" x 1.75"), a loaf of bread, and a tub of margarine, from ALDI, for £5-88.

That should feed you, for a couple or three days.

Convenience food (ready curries and so forth) is unlikely to offer value for money. Rice costs just over a pound a kilo; cooks in ten minutes; and since it absorbs water while cooking a ten-kilo bag feeds a family for ages and ages.

If I could afford value sausages and mash, I'd definitely be picking that over rice.

The OP, though poor, doesn't seem to be down to the level of needing to go that far just yet.

On the other hand, no harm buying a big bag of brown rice now just in case the wife decides to keep smoking...

    Hi MattyTM,

First of all breath!! If you pop over to the old-style board there are some lovely members that will be able to help with what to buy and meal plans etc, write up a list of all food stores in the house you maybe able to make a few meals to start off with.

    xx
Thanks to money saving tips and debt repayments/becoming debt free I have been able to work and travel for the last 4 years visiting 12 countries and working within 3 of them. Currently living and working in Canada
  • agree with listing everything you have in the cupboards and posting on the old style board. It's fantastic what they do when people do this! I've seen threads where people have written meal plans and shopping lists to help people get through on next to nothing.

Check out agirlcalledjack.com for recipes on a very low budget. Out of necessity Jack had just £10 pw for food for herself and her young boy and she started blogging her recipes and how she survived. REally recommend

It is going to be a tight month. Do you have an emergency budget going forward? It might be an idea to rework your budget to have say £50 a month for emergencies?
Also why have the nursery taken 2 months worth of fees? Is there a deposit or have you just paid for next month as well? If so then presumably you'll have a bit spare next month?
    stick with it.
