Advice Needed Please

Tried To Open Basic Bank Account With Nationwide, They Informed Me That I Must Close Current Accounts Down Before I Can Open A New Account which would leave me in total limbo as far as direct debits are concerned. I Have Sent Papers Off To Payplan To Start Process Of I.va , How Do I go About Closing Current Accounts Down When I Have Huge O/d With Them, Do I Phone Or Do I Have To Call Into Bank?.........Also Would it Be Worth My While Trying To Claim Bank Charges Back From Banks And Credit Cards Or Would They Just Deduct From Debt Balance?.........I'm Scaredspeechless-smiley-040.gif

    You shouldn't have to close your other accounts before opening another basic one, even if you were to do so you're existing bank would not let you do so due to the fact you have debt with them.

    You may want to go back to Nationwide and try again, or maybe even try with a different bank. There should be no reason why any bank would make you close down your existing account before opening a new one with them.

    In reference to your query about bank charges, I would certainly look to attempt to claim them back once your new account is up and running

    A&L wanted me to close my bank account if I wanted an overdraft with them - have you asked for an account with an overdraft? I said no and kept all my accounts open.

    A basic account shouldn't come with an overdraft though... I think you should try again (with a different person or a different bank!). A major point of these basic accounts is that they're for people with debt problems. It's not possible to close an account with your previous bank if you owe them money. So you can't do that to open one of these!

    I think you've been misinformed, I'd try another person and see if you get a different answer!
