Rechargable Batteries

Rechargable Batteries - Are these things really money savers. I am sick of having to pay out for fresh batteries all the time. Remote controlls, wireless devices, Wii Games console you name it they all require batteries.
For comparison - AA batteries are the common, whats the best deals on standard 4pk AA Batteries and for comparison whats the best deal for AA rechargable batteries.
Of course some brands will be more expensive than other brands(supermarket own Brands) and also rechargeable batteries go by their capacity, but like i said the best deals in your oppinion so balance the options of longevity/price etc.
Cost on the environment would be another important consideration - are normal batteries better than rechargable batteries.. lets discuss!!

Take a look at 7dayshop.com0

Have a look in you local poundland as I bought mine there ages ago and
use them on quite a few things like cordless mouse, tv remote etc.0 -
I use Ni-MH rechargeable batteries (rather than Ni-CD) as they do not suffer from "memory" if they are partially used and then re-charged.
I get these from eBay and a set of AA 2500mAh cost about the same as a set of copper tops premium brand batteries.
As they can be recharged about 1000 times there is a definite saving on landfill - 1/1000 th of the volume in fact - so that one stacks up.
In terms of power usage - as long as you remember to turn the transformer for your charger off when not charging then the actual power consumption is nominal. If this is a real concern then there are solar charges available on the market at very reasonable prices - great for summer hols!
I do not know what the foot print for manufacture is but I would assume that the production of any type is as good as at equivalence for the same size battery as would be the transportation impact so there is another argument that rechargeable have 1/1000th the impact of non.
When looking at just rechargeable Cadmium is very poisonous so better to go with Ni-MH.
The "new" Lithium Ion battery has not, as far as I know, reached the standard battery stage (AAA, AA etc) - these offer a greater charge capacity for weight - these will, no doubt, be soon available when problems with stability are sorted - they are used in portable power tools, laptops etc where re-charging can be better supervised.
One also need to bear in mind that your typical alkaline battery gives 1.5v and the Ni-MH gives 1.2v - most of the time this is okay but for some equipment it prevents correct operation.0 -
visited these forums for a few weeks and finally registered so this is my first post.
there are now full 1.5v rechargables on the market, alkaline RAM batteries, although they do not have the life of NiMH batteries (only recharge up to 200 times for RAM) but they are perfect for those items which will not work with the 1.2v types.0 -

Thanks for that - I just chec ked out eBay...
http://search.ebay.co.uk/alkaline-RAM-batteries
Good prices @ 3.49 + P&P - but be aware they need a specialist charger (Only 3.99 + P&P)
I also note......alkaline-manganese battery system that contains an insignificant percentage of toxic pollutants...
Which is an eco-bonus!!!
Cheers

We have all but phased out "nornal" batteries in our house because we were concerned about waste, dipsoal and cost of batteries. We buy Nimh rechargables from Aldi, Lidl, Maplin, Poundland whenever there's a deal on. The cost and waste are barely noticeable. Rechargables used to have a bad press because of very short life but this has improved a great deal in recent times.
Go for it and you can help save the planet and help save yourself cash at the same time...that's what I call a good deal.Just because somebody is certain doesn't mean they are right!0 -
I think the prices here seem cheap (IMHO)

I've bought loads in the past but they always seem to disappear. I've even been through all the kids toys looking for them. I suspect I probably get through them at a similar rate to normal batteries only they cost a lot more.0

I decided to go 'rechargeable' and bought 4 sets of AA's from aldi at "2.50 p/pack of 4 - Whilst on holiday took nearly 300 photo's on one set of 4 batteries - (didnt take many photo's using flash though') - Definately going to save me lots of money."
