Rude mortgage adviser at Barclays

I was applying for a mortgage face to face with a lady at Barclays and she was so rude! After giving my credit card balances she said 'wow it'll be a miracle if this goes through' and then when she asked if I had any defendants and I said 3 kids & am married - she said 'wow this just goes from bad to worse, there is no chance this will go through'.

It did go through anyway, but surely they can't say stuff like this???

    Hahaha, thats quality.

Good to know Barclays have trained their staff in politeness.

She absolutely can say it, and she did. However she shouldnt have from a customer service point of view. I would write a complaint, or she wont ever get retrained so she doesnt do it to the next person

They can say stuff like this. But it's not exactly good customer service ! I'd speak to the branch manager and make a complaint - though obviously it's only your word against hers. But if other people have also made similar complaints, then she may find herself down at the job centre fairly soon :-)

No doubt most mortgage arrangers have thought comments like that, but it's not very professional to have actually said it in the way that you have reported.

But there's two sides to every story. From her point of view, she might have thought that it was unlikely that the application would be acceptable, and thought it best not to get your hopes too high, and said the things in what she thought was a jokey friendly way.

Unfortunately it sounds like you were seen by someone inexperienced or simply in the wrong job, neither of which are your fault... assumptions are made very quickly of people but a qualified Mortgage advisor should know better - after all they must have half a brain to get qualified.

However they absolutely should not be talking to customers like this, insist on getting their Area Managers' details and speak directly to them or personally hand a signed complaint letter to the branch manager.

Word of warning though - if you are putting a mortgage application through with that advisor / or colleague a complaint to their boss may not be wise. You may then find your application on the bottom of the pile and it could well be a slow and painful process.

Did she say it in a jokey way?

I say things like that to clients if its pretty bad (but im still confident it will go through). If i know it doesnt have a hope in hell I would never say that.

Another poor experience with Barclays here - a personal advisor asked the mortgage advisor to see me but he was 'too busy'. 40 minutes later he was still stood chatting with other colleagues. I took my business elsewhere.

I recently had someone who didn't want to use us (and they didn't) complain to the HA that I told them we had no alternative but to charge a fee because of the commission we would receive on their mortgage, £170.

Why do some people find the truth so difficult to swallow?

Whilst there is a way to present information and opinion, there is no harm at all in pointing out the potential negatives that you are likely to face. Indeed, it can be common sense to do so.

I'd rather get told the truth than be lied to.

So basically, you're just objecting to her words? If she had said ' I doubt you'll be accepted so prepare yourself' would that have been any different?
You're just annoyed because you feel she was casting aspersions on your income and life choices. Get over it.
