Verrucas (& schools)

Just wondered if the teacher is telling me right at school.

When i was younger, if you had a verruca then you had to wear a plastic sock in the swimming pool and would wear plimsols when it was indoor P.E. (usually they do it bare feet). DS has got a verruca so i duly told the supply class teacher about it. She told me that DS would have to cover his feet in P.E., or, as it is only 2 weeks of term left, just sit out of P.E. until the end of term to save me buying plimsols.. I then happened to bump into the regular class T.A. and mentioned it again incase the message didn't get passed on. The T.A. informs me that verrucas are viral and therefore you no longer have to cover feet in swimming pools or indoor P.E.

Does this sound right to you MSEr's? Just want to do the right thing...

well little miss divadees school make you wear a verucca sock for swimming and wear plimsolls/trainers for pe if you have a verucca.

To save your little one sitting out and missing pe (they get so little time at pe anyway) couldnt you buy a very cheap pair of plimsolls from asda? I think they are about 1.50 there.

I personally dont know if not covering then is the true medical thing to do, but they can be caught from one person to another how else would people get them!!!!

And for advise about treating it, i have used the wartner stuff (its not cheap though!!) and that is brilliant within a week of using it it had gone.

Veruccas have to be covered at my girls school. Have also just used Wartner (bout £12 at Asda) stuff for DD1 verruca still took 2 months but she hadn't told us bout it so think was quite deep.

I was going to buy plimsols anyway, as they are so cheap. I think the 1st teacher was saying that to save me money. Also bought removal stuff - just under £12 from Tesco!!! (better work!)

If you think about it, a cold is viral also and is passed from one person to the other, so I am confused a bit. Both the teacher & T.A. seem to have a point. Although i will be a tad annoyed if DS caught it due to another kid having a verruca and being told not to cover it up in P.E.

The joys of having kids... I am waiting for our first headlice infestation!!

I think they did some reasearch and found that verruccas spread just as fast if they were covered up as if they weren't!
Signature removed for peace of mind

When DD was younger, she was plagued with verrucas, having up to a dozen at one time. We got rid of them with neat tea tree oil applied on a cotton bud. Lots cheaper than the "official" remover!
"Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.

Just found this on a net doctor website...
A foot with verrucas releases virus infected cells onto the floor. The wet and more receptive skin of others may then become infected.

People with scratches or cuts on the soles of their feet are especially vulnerable.

Not all people are susceptible to the virus. When children share bathrooms that contain the viruses, some of them will get verrucas, while others seem to be totally immune. The reason for this difference is not known.

In case anyone else is in the same situation as us....

Just checked the situation with a health visitor & school nurse today. Both said the advice has NOT changed. Should cover foot with one of those plastic socks for swimming and must NOT do P.E. indoors with bare feet in school. The school is incorrect when they say that it is OK for kids with verrucas to do indoor P.E. with bare feet.

...no guesses for where DS picked it up from in the first place then.....
  • My daughter got 3 verrucas last year from doing dance bare foot. I was quite cross as several children had verrucas and were running around bare foot! After many visits to the dr we got rid of them. She has gone back to school and they are starting dance at the hall again..... and guess what... she has another 2! " of the pupils that had them last year have still got them.. 12 months on and still running bare foot! I approached the head and she said the advice they have been given is to carry on bare foot and that they will clear up on their own?! I have sent her with gripper socks! Is there anything else I can do, someone to contact? Its frankly disgusting in my mind!
  • We've been told that our local pool will not allow swim socks anymore. They apparently have a tendency to fill with water and drag the child. The local pool are standing by the advice that the chlorine will kill of any germs lurking around.

in the interest of money saving (after all thats why we are all here!!) I would suggest getting some Salactol from the pharmacy- its about £3-4 rather than the £12 that you are paying for wartner!

Its like a paint- you paint it on, wait for it to dry then cover it with a plaster- i did this in the so-called summer after catching one from the local school (my local weightwatchers is in one, and socks would add more weight LOL) and within a week it had fallen off.

Dont let it be in contact with any of the skin around te verruca

Hope this is of some help to someone :-)
