Who has bought their teenager their first car?
Did you pay for the lesson, insurance & tax, too?

Until I read this article I never really considered just how much money driving would cost a parent if they were expected to help get their child on the road.. Especially if you had more than one child!!
I think that it's great if a parent can help in some way, but also feel that it's a big learning & life experience if the child pays for at least half of the total costs.. I think that they would have a lot more pride and take much more care on the roads.

Blog is aimed at the americans.
Sounds like spam to me.
If you are a car owner you would already know how much it costs to run one.0 -
If you care about them, you'll make them pay for themselves (at least for the car), kids don't respect things if they're gifts, want little Johnny to drive like a lunatic and have an accident, then buying him a car is the fastest way to do it.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Eldest' s learning just now. Grandparents bought the first few lessons, I paid his first theory.
He'll buy the car, he'll pay the running costs, I'll pay the insurance upfront and he can pay me back (to save the interest).
If he needs to claim in his first year, he'll be on his own with that too.0 -
Was never in a position to pay for any of mine to learn unfortunately.#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

OH and I have 5 children between us. As each has passed their test we've funded the first car. We hadn't planned to, but DD2 was living with us when she passed, and between the fact that she was too young to drive either of our cars, and we weren't on a bus route, we made the decision to buy (Citroen Saxo, £1600). We also paid for the insurance but she paid us back every month.
Having done that for DD2, we felt we should give the same amount of money to DD1 when she passed - you've got to be fair. Then of course DD4 passed, so we bought her a car for the same sort of money again, but she was able to pay for her own insurance. When DS1 passed his test, it coincided with DD4 emigrating, so she left her car with him (phew!!) - but we gave him the same amount of money, to go towards his insurance (being a young lad, he was paying a lot more than the girls). DD3 has just passed her test at the start of the year, so yes, we bought her a car - but she's sorted out her own insurance.
We try to treat them all similarly (it's impossible to treat them all the same). There's been about 10 years between the first one passing and the last one, so we've had chance to save up in between!!No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...0 -
Son saved for his first car via the proceeds of a part time job since he was 16, which i was then able to get him through the motor trade, as i was trading at the time.
More saving, a little profit from a few trade ups into better cars that i guided him with and he now has his fifth car in 3 years - a BMW 120d M Sport that he bought for £9,000 in cash. It has a retail price of maybe £12,000 if he had went to a dealers for it.
Didnt want to - and hadnt the money to - buy him his car, but this way its his own cash so looks after it.0 -
I'd probably buy the lessons as my parents did for me. That way there's less pressure to "learn quickly" or skimp on lessons. Wouldn't buy them a car though.0

I bought my first car (L reg Ford Escort) with money I had saved as a teenager. My dad paid my first years insurance, got me some tyres and a tank of fuel0
