    Sorry for late reply.

The letter is addressed to him by his business name, it doesn't mention my mother by name on the letter anywhere.

ok then see my previous reply "Unless the letter was adressed to your mum, there is no problem. If any bailiffs turn up, tell them that X no ,longer lives with your mum and you have no idea where he is because they broke up in 2006 or whenever. "

My mother has recently received a letter from HMRC regarding a debt of over £17,000 dating back all the way to 2004 for one of her ex partners antenna installing business.

What we need to know is what can we do about it, my mother was not even involved in the running of the business and he had started it up long after they split up but at that time they were still on speaking terms.

I dont understand how they have got our new address since we have moved out of the area, mum no longer speaks to him and we do not know where he is now living.

I'd want to know how they have connected your Mum's new address to a business set up by her ex.

Could be a multitude of ways he could've gotten her details. Mis-sent post, social media (although in its infancy back then), dodgy friends who traced, etc...

This is however me thinking with my 'CSI' hat on, though.

Most likely by her credit file. The only mistake on mine was being connected to my ex wife at this address. We divorced 2 years before I moved here.

Danguy - once you have sorted this problem out I would get copies of her credit file from all of the agencies. If she is connected to him, it is a simple process to get that fixed.

You think the ex gave HMRC her new address?

If it was for the purpose of tax avoidance (which is what this is looking like it might be to me), then there could be that possibility.
