I disagree. It's great if used right. Circumstances change and we grow up.

    1) Phone VWFS in the morning & ask them for a settlement figure
    2) Get your valuation (£17k ?) in writing
    3) Assuming the 17k valuation is more than the settlement figure then sell your car to them and pay off finance

    Simples

If valuation is lower than settlement figure then repeat steps 1 & 2 every month until they balance

A concern is that I am black listed for coming out of the agreement early. Is this likely or should I seek written confirmation that this will not happen?

    That doesn't happen.

I've voluntarily terminated a VWFS agreement (i.e handed car back after 50% payments) and no mark on my credit record. VWFS may well hold internal records of VT's in case you applied through them again but they don't seem to share them

If you settle the finance, you can't be blacklisted.

I'm pleased to hear that blacklisting won't be a consequence. I shall seek the outstanding balance to settle and get an up to date valuation. I will consider selling privately (if allowed) so that I can get as much money as possible, that way I may have some left over to put down a deposit on a cheaper vehicle.

Is it possible a different manufacturer, say Peugeot, would work with the financier to settle the debt, take my car and sort out finance on something cheaper, or is that not something that happens in general?

    Thank you all

Yes - another dealer/manufacturer can settle the finance for you if they take your car in p/x

they maydo, what ever its saying online go on cap as this is what dealers use to buy trade ins
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

I glad to hear other makers may be able to help with part x. The ideal outcome would be getting rid of the Audi, having settled its finance and having a relative sum as a deposit on a new vehicle for around £200 a month. That would save a handsome sum!

Thanks for all of the input
