'Off Plan'?

I am in the process of purchasing a property. I am using a firm of solicitors whom I have dealt with on many occasions before. As well as having solicitors they also employ conveyancers and paralegals which is fine as they specialise in conveyancing. My purchase however is being dealt with (at a fixed price) by a solicitor who specialises in 'off plan' conveyancing. The property I am buying is a new build, and as far as I'm aware was built to plan.
Can anyone explain what 'off plan' actually means as I am at a loss as to why he is dealing with it rather than someone else (it could obviously just be down to workloads, staff holidays etc).

Off plan means it's being bought before it has been built. You're effectively buying it from the plans.Thinking critically since 1996....0

Oh I see. Thank you. For some reason I had it in my head that off plan meant that it had/would be built not in accordance with the plans.0

Yeah it's just buying houses at the pre-completion stage.
It should work ok for a new build. Offplan is definitely more complex than regular properties, so he should have some ability.0 -
