Help with Spray painting some plastic garden pots please???

Hi all

We have lots of plastic terracotta coloured garden plant pots that i would really love to spray paint different colours but I have no idea what paint to use and where to get it? I am not working so would like to do this cheap and cheerful, Can I get hold of any spray paint cheap in pound shops or b&m type shops?

Any help would be brilliant thanks!

If you've got time rather than paint them cover them in off cuts of different materials, ..... denim or old wallpaper, .... tiles or a mirror broken up, maybe sea shells.

I had some old plastic pots and used the same paint that I used for the wooden garden furniture (pale turquoise) so I had matching furniture and pots -this used the the small amount of paint I had left over from furniture painting.
An alternative could be to buy some tester match pots of paint and then you can go wild with your imagination with all the different colours that are done.

I too recommend th broken tiles/shells course. It can look very effective and some glue doesn't cost much I bought a few odd tiles at a boot sale and whacked them with a hammer and just stuck them on and when over the lot afterwards with clear varnish

I used Annie Sloan chalk paint on my plastic pots last year and they still look good. You can make your own chalk paint - check out the shabby chic thread or Memory Girl's blog.

You used to be able to buy paint specifically for plastic pots. I paint my teracotta pots different colours every year.

LOL at this as yesterday had friends admiring my collection of black pots (all filled with red geraniums, looking stunning). The LOL is because my black pots were previously the plastic terracotta ones you're talking about. I use the black spray on paint for car bumpers, get it from the £shops. Layer newspaper on the back lawn, put the pots down and then spray. Usually do couple of coats on outside and down to just below what I estimate will be soil level on the inside.

Depending on the weather, paint coat lasts 2 - 3 years, when it starts to come off (doesn't peel, not sure what happens, just notice that there's terracotta colour showing through in places), then I repeat the process (but obviously emptying the plants out!). One can of the spray paint does quite a lot of pots. Just make sure it's not a windy day else your border plants get what looks like black spot disease!
