New starters on a higher base salary

Hi I work for a large company within a contact centre and I earn enough to get buy with the wage I am on.
Having been there a year and got my pay review based on performance I was quite happy as I got higher than average as well as the normal increase in pay we have.
As a company they have recruited new starters at a higher basic salary than us existing workers. Even taking into account the pay rises I get I'm not on par with them.
Is this legal? Or fair even.
The union have approached the company in terms of this and they are looking into it.
Just wanted to see what people thought

This always seems to happen to me too. In my last job, they employed two graduates fresh out of Uni on £5k more than me (I was 10 years their senior and with lots of experience, plus I'd been a top performer in the role for the past two years).
In my current job, I'm the top performer in my region, but it appears I'm being paid the least basic (I work in Sales).
Some people are just better at negotiating a starting salary than others and it's not illegal to my knowledge. Feel your pain though!0 -
Nothing illegal about paying different rates to different people even if you worked along side them doing the same job as long as its not discrimiminating. You could always ask for more money to even you up.0
