Contracts signed, now potentially no role

Hi,
I have just recently (about 1 month ago) got and accepted a new permanent role with a fairly large company. I am due to start work with this company on the 17th June- however yesterday I was advised by them the office was potentially going to move down south (about 250 miles away) within the next 6 months. I wasn't made aware of this until yesterday and they are saying they have only just found out themselves. They have give me the option of relocating (which im not going to do) retracing the offer acceptance or working with the company until they move and then be left with no job. I would like some advise as to were I stand with this as I have handed my notice in with my current employer (my role has been filled so no chance of my job back). Any advise is much appreciated.
Thank you

Not very well I'm afraid.
As you probably know you have no protection against unfair dismissal during the first two years (except for certain types of discrimination) so they can simply terminate your employment by giving whatever notice is specified in your contract. If none is specified then it would be one week (once you have worked there for a month).0 -
I would start the new job -
a) at least you'll be earning while you look for another job
b) there'll be no gap in your CV
c) the company is 'potentially' moving in the next 6 months. Things change, it may take longer than 6 months, or it might not happen at all.
They seem to be being very reasonable, telling you as soon as they have found out themselves. They're probably quite embarrassed that they've put you in this situation. No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...0 -
Take the job then work out what to do next.
Do they have any other offices that are commutable
A chance to increase your network as well.
The issue is if a lot of people don't want to relocate and the move goes ahead there could be a flood of people on the job market.0 -
I'd also take the job and then start looking elsewhere. Most likely you'll only need to give a week or so notice during your probationary period so you're very flexible but at least earning money.
Good luck!0 -
At least they've told you. I really don't see how you have any choice but to take the job and start looking again. The alternative is to be unemployed, and as you have a job available for up to 6 months I don't see how that is a more attractive option.0
