I've worked for a small company for 4 years always been able to have holidays someone else related to owner started working for the company and goes on about sacrifices for company etc. I work more hours and wanted a days holiday. They were not happy with me having holiday but office manager allowed it. Other employee made me feel very bad about having day off and when I needed another day I just asked office manager not telling colleague I was off. Going back I got told off by manager and made to feel very bad by colleague hardly talking to me for not telling them I had booked day off. I was scared to tell her after her previous reaction. I feel I can't risk taking anymore holiday or just should look for another job. (Previously when I told colleague about booking day off I was shouted at and felt very humiliated)

You are entitled to take holidays and your employer is breaking the law if you are not allowed to book time off...0

As long as you submit your holiday form at least the same number of days before as equals the period of holiday (so book 5 days off, submit request 5 days before), then the employer would need to refuse it.
Under the working time directive your holidays are a right not a privilege.
Can you sit down and discuss the process with your manager and try and agree a way forward?:jI am an Employment Law Paralegal and an experienced Human Resources Manager and offer my guidance as simply that ... guidance :j0 -
I was told off for not letting colleague know I
Had day off even though booked with manager. It's very uncomfortable today at work. I will search for another job but don't want to get sacked. Thanks for your reply0 -
We don't have holiday forms just verbal and I gave a weeks notice for one days holiday0

You been there 4 years so take heart, perhaps someone was just stressed x current place has some sort of ritual if anyone wants holidays not only do you check that you'll be only one of but also that the colleagues are OK with overtime in such absense cos hours have to be covered:cool: omg just goes to show, single days of get declined, never experienced it before so just posting in empathy I guess, don't know it's like the new power kick almost nowadays in daring to take leave0

Can you email to request a holiday, or follow up the verbal request with a confirmation email? Then you have proof that it's been requested in good time, etc.0

Sounds like a relative employee thowing their weight around.
Is the owner approachable0 -
Is it worth making a suggestion of a planner or calendar on which people's leave requests are recorded? Manager says yes, it's on the calendar, what's the issue?Signature removed for peace of mind0
