Are packages cheaper than DIY?

Options
So blokie and me decided on getting married next year.

Will be a very tight budget and having a browse around online.

Is it just me or does it work out cheaper to just go for a hotel wedding package than try to piece it all together yourself?

Even looking at basic local hall hire, then you've got to buy drinks as there's no bar (usually), and caterers, and it adds up to more overall?

I'd love to properly DIY it all as I'm a control freak but don't really want to spend half my wedding day making sandwiches.

But the wedding packages we could afford are so......boring. And in places like Holiday Inn, not lovely country estates. :(

What's been your experience?

  • Packages for chain type hotels can be good value, but the initial package price is often for a small number of guests who could feel 'lost' in their large function room. When you add on extras like for evening guests, and extra drink, it can work out pricey.

DIY can also work out expensive though, espeically if you get outside caterers in - they are a lot more pricey than I first thought as they generally charge more as they are not using their own kitcken and so have to transport their equipment etc to your venue.

Are you talking about legally marrying? In which case it's £70 for the giving notice bit and well under £100 just for the reg office bit.
Or are we talking about a do?

    Sorry, being pedantic....

A couple of friends had hen/stag then very quietly went off to registry office with just their witnesses. They have promised a do but they did get married, which is surely what counts

We are getting married in a museum, a beautiful old building that was connected with a palace then going elsewhere for the meal. The package for the reception was cheaper than diy and it meant a lot of the hassel like where to get chair covers and the cake from was cut down. We did go to several places before to price but didnt fancy any of the chain hotels.

but it does depend what you want....

We had a big wedding and I found that the wedding packages were expensive but you could go in and negotiate for exactly what we wanted and amend their packages quite a lot. Generally they wont give you money off but will thrown things in. It was also good to make it really clear that you were comparing them with one or more places so that you could get more out of them!
