Bensons for Beds

I am in the process of buying a house and have seen 2 beds i like the look of in Bensons. One shop told me that I could put down a 10% deposit and that if the house purchase fell through i could get a full refund and not have to go through with the purchase. The other shop i went into told me that wasn't true. Does anybody know what the position actually is?

Also i tried to haggle on price, delivery charges etc but had no luck whatsoever - anybody had any luck in haggling bensons down or do they tend not to give any disconunts etc

Is bensons also a good place to buy from or should I avoid?

Thanks for any help!

  • From my experience i would avoid.

Look at the reviews online as i rated them 1 star. I have no bed and im £200 out of pocket at the moment.
  • I ordered a bed from the Derby Meteor Centre store on 13th July 2014. We were looking to purchase a good quality bed as my girlfriend has fibromyalgia which causes her a lot of pain so it was imperative that the bed was to her satisfaction.
We chose the bed which happened to be one of the most expensive in the store and the Store manager was very happy to sell us the bed and guaranteed that the bed would be delivered between 07:00 - 10:00 on a specific day so that we didn't have to take time out of work. We explained that we lived in a new build property and that we have L-Shaped stairs to which the manager said that it would be no problem in getting the mattress into the room.

When the delivery day came we rang to ask what time the delivery was scheduled to ensure the time was as previously stated to which we were told that we were the 'LAST DROP' which meant that the delivery was coming to us for 1pm. Obviously we argued our case but they basically told us that the manager should not have given us a specific time at all as they don't have any control over the delivery schedule!!

Anyway, the bed came at 13:00 and after many attempts the mattress did not fit up the stairs as apparently this mattress 'COULD NOT BEND' due to having metal and boarding inside which completely contradicts what the store manager had said to us previously. They also said that because they should know this mattress cant bend they should have given me a measuring kit or at least told me to measure between a certain step and the lowest point of the ceiling to ensure the mattress could fit. I had to reject the order due to all of these reasons and i called Bensons who accepted that it was their fault and that this should have been discussed when purchasing the bed. They told me that i could then change the bed for a 'Zip and Link' bed which is essentially the same but it comes in 2 parts which is easier to fit in houses like mine. Very unclear why i wasnt offered this in the first place!

So, i spend ANOTHER day going back into the store and met with the store manager to discuss about a replacement bed. We required one urgently as we no-longer had a bed to sleep in as we sold it due to getting a new bed. We were shown the 'Zip and Link' bed and we asked for one to be sent to us for the up-coming week to which we were told no, there is a 2.5 WEEK delay as the bed has to be made. Obviously with this being Bensons fault we thought they would have offered us some kind of compensation or at least some monies towards getting a temporary bed or accommodation until the bed was delivered. but no, the manager basically laughed when we said that we needed a bed due to my girlfriends condition and were told to buy an 'AIR BED' until the bed was delivered. Obviously i was very disappointed by this and due to the managers arrogance and lack of customer care we told him to cancel the order to which he responded 'You can do but there will be a charge'.
I spent the next hour or so on the phone to customer services telling them how disappointed i was with the manager's customer service and how it was 'mis-sold' to me due to these many reasons. They rang up the manager of the store who completely lied stating 'I TOLD THEM TO GO HOME AND MEASURE UP TO MAKE SURE THE MATTRESS WILL FIT. ONCE THEY KNOW TO COME BACK AND ORDER THE BED'. This surely shows the lack of integrity of the type of management they allow at their store.
I have been told that i have to pay a 10% cancellation fee which i am pursuing through 3rd parties to ensure i get this back as it was not my fault at all that the bed was mis-sold.

I shall continue to write up my comments on to each and every feedback site about Bensons to ensure that people understand how poor their customer service and after sales are, especially when you go back into the store. This shouldn't have affected my statuary rights to return the bed due to it being mis-sold and i should be re-reimbursed any monies that i have wasted on this especially for my time off work!

I found them a little expensive (but then what bed store isn't!) but the bed is okay.
Bought a double divan bed. They tried to flog us a mattress protector but we declined. The lady was nice who served us and didn't push too much. We then decided when the bed arrived (at 7am :O ) to get a mattress protector anyway because ours has a cushion-type pad on the top. That means it can only be flipped one way but it's pretty comfy, a 3 I think it was.

The bed seems quite good quality.
We've had it for nearly two years now and still looks like new. The wood isn't bowing anywhere and no squeaks (apart from selected nights of the year!).
  • I used to work for Bensons for Beds a few years ago (I urgently needed a job whilst looking for a job I wanted to do). Can honestly say I wuld never buy a bed from them, Argos are the biggest bed seller in the country and as long as you go for a decent brand you will generall be ok with them.

As for Bensons, when I was there most staff were able to move the price to a certain amount, normaly no more than 10-15% off, I havent heard of the refundable deposit so I wouldnt chance it to be honest, I really think they would keep it and point you to the terms and conditions in the agreement, delivery tensa to be hard to sort out with a few restrictions on dates, times etc, I found that the best bargins were if you were willing to buy debds from the display, better reductions and these really not used at all other than the odd customer sitting on briefly.

Hope that helpa a bit, quality wise the beds are fine though, I just wouldnt buy from there myself, can be overpriced compared to some places.
