Out of date food shops?

Hi all,

I've shopped at Approvedfood.co.uk a few times and heard of ClearanceXL, so imagine my delight when an out of date food shop popped up in my home town, Weston-super-Mare! For those in the area, the shop is on Aller Parade in Oldmixon.

I'm all for cheap food that is at or past it's best before date for several reasons. There is generally nothing wrong with it, it saves me money, it helps eliminate waste.

The shop is called "Bargain Brand Food Outlet" and can be found on Facebook under that name, plus another store they own in nearby Highbridge.

I picked up tins of tomatoes for 25p, Crisps, Sweets, Box of Biscuits, Bottles of Coke. 2 Carrier bags full of stuff and my total spend was a fiver.

I'll pay another visit later this week and try to remember to sneak a couple of pictures on my phone!

So, do you have out of date food shops near you, or is this a very new idea?

There is one in londonderry - in lisnagelvin shopping centre. Its not purely a reduced food shop. The do pound shop type stuff too - toys, cleaning, DIY, etc.

they do reduced , out of date tea, coffee, sweet stuff, crisps, and small selection of tins and jars. Bit limited but worth a look.

Would be good to see more of these. Even a warehouse style place where you can buy cases of things you use often - drinks, tins etc.

So basically they are hoovering up in bulk the out of date stuff I would normally buy cheap in a normal supermarket charging more for it and making a profit. No wonder the price of these things in normal supermarkets are increasing.
I started with nothing and I am proud to say I still have most of it left.

Not at all. They are buying this stuff from distributors before it's gone to the Supermarkets - so no one is losing out here.

The price of these things is going up because people are finally realising that Best Before dates really aren't that important. Generations before us didn't have "best before" stamped on everything and they never came to harm!

In the north we have Fulton Foods (prev known as Jack Fultons). Always a bargain to be had in the chiller section be it branded yogurts, cooked meats, bacon/gammon, pies, cheese etc. (My best ever bargain was packs of Hero ham at 3 for £1!!) They also stock cereal, crisps, tinned goods much cheaper than the supermarkets. In the freezer section it's a bit hit and miss. The best savings are on pizzas, frozen desserts and ice creams. Though sometimes there are decent bargains lurking in there! Like the time I got Amy's Kitchen ready meals at 2 for £1. I am not normally a lover of ready meals but Amy's are natural and organic so these were snapped up!

None near me - but they certainly exist in different parts of the country. I was in Fleetwood on the North West coast recently , and found at least 3 of them in the same shopping area.

Thank you :) We are staying somewhere between Bristol and Bath and plan to do a day in Bath, a day by the seaside and two days in Bristol and leave on the Sunday via the car boot sale in Cheddar

If you know of any good other good discount stores or boot sales we would be grateful if you could let us know :)
