My son went to the job centre today to sign on, they gave him a number to ring, he rang and they made an appointment for him to go on Friday at 9.15 after hanging up he realised he'd made a mistake because he already had a driving lesson booked at that time, he rang them back and they were absolutely adamant that he couldn't book another appointment, surely that can't be right?

It's probably right, our local job centre will only move appointments if it's medical related and can be proved by a letter.
But if he's searching for a job then shouldn't that take higher priority? No longer using this account for new posts from 20130 -

Hmmm! He's just finished uny, he has transfered from Iceland( worked there for 3 years whilst doing his degree) in Nottingham to here but they are only giving him 8 hrs a week. It has took him ages to sort out the driving lesson with a good( first one on friday) instructor. He has now changed the lesson to Sunday which means he can't go to Nottingham to see his girlfriend at the w/end. Having a driving licence will open the jobs market up massively for him. Priority/ jobsworths I think I'd give in!!!0 -
If it was me I would get my priorities right - its obviously easier to change a driving lesson than an appointment with the jobcentre, seeing as they were adamant it couldnt be changed. The quicker he does this he sooner his claim to benefit can be assessed and awarded..... thus mor money for driving lessons.0

The new claim appointment can be cancelled, but whatever date is given for a futrue appointment will be the new date of claim (ie some days will be lost).
The choices, as others have pointed out, are simple and a matter of priorities.0 -
after many years of experience with the job centre, i would advise you to expect nothing from them. this is partly because they are just too busy to faff about, and partly because most of the people who work there are stressed/ overworked/ unhelpful. be prepared, always have all the documents and proof you need, make sure you are firm and don't slip up with things like appointments. you need them more than they need you.0

There isn't just your Son wanting an appointment you know.
It's you and your son who have priorities the wrong way around.0
