Declaring an old bankruptcy on job app

Hello everyone,
Firstly, this is a terrific site and my first time here although I am very familiar with Martin the moneysaving expert - have listened to him on the Jeremy Vine show many a time.
I don't know if this thread is in the right place or even if it is can anybody give me an answer ? ! Oh well, here goes anyway !
I have over the years been pretty silly with money and my job history isnt particularly impressive either and I am presently applying for a job whereby I will be servicing and repairing cash point machines and obviously I will be vetted etc as this will be a position that requires trust. I am an honest person and wouldn't dream of being dishonest in or out of the workplace, trouble is a prospective employer doesn't know this and only has information about me to go by when making his/her decision on whether to employ me.
The application form states that a ten year work history will be required and also asks if I've ever been made bankrupt...I have twice been bankrupt, once in 1993 and once in 1997, should I declare these dates or say nothing and hope that this doesnt get picked up on ? !! I would rather be honest but i dont have any discharge certificates as I've moved a few times over the years too !
Any advice would be greatly received.
Thanks in advance,
a worried Darron !

Hiya Darron
I couldnt be 100% but Ive been in 2 jobs ( in one now) where I handle paymetns and they have had to do a credit check on me.
Im fine ( how, i dont know!) and they have confirmed.
I would declare them. Its over 10 years since gonig BR last time, I presume you are not heading down that road again - or are things still difficult for you? Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -
I agree. You should declare them.
Although the bankruptcy's will have dropped off your CRF's and your details will no longer be registered on the online 'Individual Insolvency Register' the fact that you have been bankrupt is still public domain info.
I believe if anyone checked hard enough they could obtain the details from the London Gazette.
If you should require copies of your discharge certificates then these are obtainable from the original court that heard you case.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

Hiya Lynz !
Darn, I did you a great reply and the page timed out or something !
Thankyou so much for your quick reply and for the great advice too !
No, things are fine now apart from a small amount of debt from when I was married 4 yrs ago or so....no chance of me going bankrupt again.....I was unfortunate really...the first time I was in debt but got made redundant and the citizens advice advised me to go bankrupt in 93.....got the third degree by the receiver i can tell you....needed a mega stiff drink after that fiasco ! my second one in 97 was me being stupid...borrowed too much , obviously hadnt learnt my lesson and again lost my job, couldnt pay ! second roasting by OR in Reading...i vowed id never be that stupid again !! My ex-wife took out loans on our joint account without me knowing ( HSBC , goodness knows how they managed to give my wife a loan based on my salary without my consent is beyone me but they did ) . As my name was on the joint account i copped for half the repayments which im still paying for and a car loan to buy her a car that she doesnt even own anymore !! what a mess !!
Anyway, i think its best to be honest and your advice is spot on . My credit history isnt good but I applied for a flat last year and was credit checked and got thru that ok so i guess its a check to make sure you are who you say you are kinda thing.
Cheers Lynz

I agree that you SHOULD, if asked, declare your bankruptcies, although they will not show up on a normal credit check.
Whilst they can ask for a ten year work history, they will be unable to do a ten year credit check, as defaults, CCJ's and Bankruptcy references MUST be deleted from your credit file after six years.
Banruptcy is NOT a criminal offence.
Still, it would not be honest if you did not declare your bankruptcies when asked.
Good luck with the Job application.I am NOT, nor do I profess to be, a Qualified Debt Adviser. I have made MANY mistakes and have OFTEN been the unwitting victim of the the shamefull tactics of the Financial Industry.
If any of my experiences, or the knowledge that I have gained from those experiences, can help anyone who finds themselves in similar circumstances, then my experiences have not been in vain.

Darron, I think you should declare them. You say you're an honest person, so put them down - it will work in your favour that you're prepared to say they happened rather than chance hiding them, but even if you don't get the job you won't have been dishonest. It takes nothing but a few minutes to go onto the Insolvency Register to look up recent bankruptcies, & they could certainly find out about your old ones from the London Gazette, which apparently holds records indefinitely. If you didn't declare them & they found out about them subsequently, I think they'd sack you pretty quickly, & the odds are that would happen at an extremely inconvenient & embarrassing time for you. Put them down, & good luck.

Hi there,
My first time posting although i have 'lurked' on these boards for months.
My husband works for one of these cash in transit firms that you are applying to (i wont mention which).
On application they will perform a 10 year police and work history check.
They cannot check your bankrupcy status unless you were self employed at that time.
You possibly could get away with not declaring it but this would be considered fraud if you were later found out.
Maybe this isn't the job for you as although my husband thinks it is unfair, a formaly bankrupt person would deffinately be frowned upon when applying for such a job.
He is after all one of the people who hires and fires.
Good luck and let us know how you get on xxI will save my tesco £1 savings stamps this year! .......so far = £50 (full card#1)
Card #2 £6. I will not be skint at Chistmas this year!

hi heaven,
thanks for a nice reply....so many nice replies and i only registerd this afternoon !!
i think i'll declare it...infact i will declare it....at least i wont be wondering if im gonna get found out that way. your hubby is brave doing that job...the job im applying for is the repair and service of the ATM machines so will be working in banks, supermarkets etc..anywhere where theres a cash machine !
im not worried really, just a bit of a palava having had so many jobs to put on my application and if im honest im just a bit embarrassed about the bankruptcies.....once is probably acceptable but twice !! i was young and stupid and naive i suppose ......thats life i guess.
thanks for the good luck wishes , much appreciated.
