Student Loan Refund letter

I had a letter purporting to be from SLCL today. it states they miscalculated my payments and now owe me a refund. They ask I phone and give bank details.

Any one else had these and is it genuine?

Bit sceptical given my past experience with this lot.

Some students on the old style loans who had arrears at some point are due refunds.

    See: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/news/loans/2014/04/refunds-for-1990s-students-after-loan-company-blunder

Find a genuine contact number for SLC from their site.

    http://www.slc.co.uk/

    Then ring that and enquire.

Then you'll know you are talking to the genuine SLC.

I had one of these this morning too. Typical that it's a bank holiday and I can't check it out until Tuesday!

Seems genuine from what I've read, but I can't imagine the refund is going to be much more than a couple of quid though, given the low value of the loans I took out in the mid 90's and the low interest that was charged on them.

I guess I'll find out next week.

Depends how long arrears and default charges went on. I know of people having £600/700 ish knocked off their loan balance.

I got one a couple of months ago. Rang the number, gave them bank details and got refunded within the week.
I was in arrears (had deferred payments - moved house - didnt let them know!!), and therefore could not defer the arrears amount. I was actually still paying it of! Nothing fishy - was genuine.

Ha! I could live with that!

I did settle mine in full 2011/2012 ish (can't remember exactly when) so I'll not get my hopes up.

Well there you go. The refund is just short of £300, and will be in my account within a week.

    Makes a change!
