    Iceland, for EmmaP

Some of this will be repeating the excellent advice from others, already posted.

(I was there around 12 years ago, for about a week, during summer. We flew to Reykjavik, hired a car, and stopped at Vik, Hveragerdi and Husavik.)

Food and drink expensive. If you feel like a drink, get some duty free on the way in, and have a couple of snifters before you go out for the evening. Get some foodstuffs at a supermarket to make sandwiches or put together a picnic, for daytimes. We took a Trangia portable stove (v small and lightweight) to brew up and cook food (packet noodles etc).

Other non-food items tended to be expensive, but there were a few places that sold beautiful handmade knitwear (hats, scaves, gloves) that was reasonably priced; I brought some back as gifts.

We only passed through Reykjavik so I couldn't really tell you the best places there to shop, eat etc.

Worth thinking about hiring a car if you plan to visit a lot of places. Get a 4-wheel drive - the roads are in the main excellent, though some of the side-roads are a bit rough and ready. (To save time, or so we thought, we drove across the island from south to north; no road at all, just these yellow markers every so often, through what looked like a moonscape or sci-fi set; we got run off the 'track' at one point by this huge truck coming the other way ... I was driving ... that was the longest and scariest day of my life.)

Or you can look into excursions - either booked in advance, or there are lots of tour companies once you get there. We did our own thing, so I can't recommend any.

Some of the places we visited...

V!k i Myrdal - in the south, around 100 miles from Reykjavik. The black sand beach (actually powdered basalt) was voted in the top ten non-tropical beaches in the world. Take a snowmobile trip on Myrdalsjokull glacier. Or a jeep tour of Katla volcano. (Can probably do both of these from Reyjavik.)

Hveragerdi - in the south, around 40 miles from Reykjavik. Hot spring capital of the world. (The town is built on an active thermal spring.) The public swimming pool is heated by steam coming straight up from the earth. Nearby is Hengill, geothermal area, with plumes of steam coming out of the ground. Hike around the hot springs and go for a swim in a hot-water river.

Husavik - in the north, too far for a day trip unfortunately. The centre for whale watching boat trips.

Jokulsarlon, glacial lagoon - in the south. Take a boat trip and look at the baby icebergs being born. Was also the location for the car-chase sequence in Die Another Day. Then explore the Vatnajokull glacier, nearby.

Strokkur - east of Reykjavik. A fountain geyser, erupts every few minutes. It's in the Haukadalur geothermal area, where there's other geothermal features: hot pools, mud pools, steam plumes etc. Take along an egg to cook in one of the hot pools - just don't put your hand in the water!

Gullfoss - east of Reykjavik. Waterfall. An awe-inspiring sight. There's waterfalls all over the place (eg Godafoss, Detifoss), all very impressive but Gullfoss is a must-see IMHO.

Horse-trekking is very popular, if you are into that kind of thing. The Icelandic horses have a fifth gait called the 'tolt'.

There's lots more I've no doubt forgotten to mention. Let me know if you need any more detailed advice.

I guarantee that that on the return journey you'll be planning what to do on your next visit ... it's that kind of place.:D

    Dear PD,

I am very sorry for the cancellation of your order.

The voucher used was created for a competition for one-person to win £40 to spend towards their trainers in the Great North Run and linked with CashforKids.

This voucher was intended for a single use as the competition prize and was not available for usage by others. We certainly did not intend this one off voucher prize to be used by our entire customer base and did not make it available ourselves other than to the competition winner. As such I hope that you will understand that we cannot complete orders made using the incorrect application of the competition voucher code.

You will be refunded within the next seven business days depending on your bank.

We very much apologise for any inconvenience caused.

My friends hubby (well ex hubby now) spent £200,000 on a sports car, he parked it in the drive way so everyone could see it.... it was stolen

I know I should not :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: but I could not help it!

I can see why people can spend £50.000 on a car but when it gets into £200,000 - £1,000,000 seriously just get a padded codpiece ;)

Items (largely) being bought in the wrong store. No need to buy 2 of the Coca Cola as it shows straight £1 for A - or indeed do not buy any Coca Cola at all as this is less quantity than what it was before and to price match a very expensive £1 price. The Rolo desserts prove to be very tempting on Avs M as they compare to M at £1:naughty:.
