Chemistry and Maths Graduate - Employment Help!?

Hi

I am going to graduate this year, hopefully with a 2:1!

I was going to do a PGCE in secondary teaching, but have talked to the University and delayed it by one year (2015-16).

I needed a break from studying, but now I need to begin looking for a job.

I'm not really sure where to begin searching or for what job! I have a very open Chemistry & Maths degree from Aston University.

At the moment I am open to any type of job, as long as I get a decent pay. However, I am more interested in more practical jobs, lab based.

I was thinking of joining some employment agency, something more specific to scientists and mathematicians, unlike say Reed.

I'm based in Birmingham, and at the moment would not like travel too far, if anyone could please point me to a good website or company or any useful advice.

I'm really worried that because I chose an vague degree of two subjects I liked, I might not get a good job.

Any advice would be appreciated, thank you.

Why not get some teaching experience in and see if it really is the career for you? Register with education recruiters and do cover supervisor work, which you can do as a graduate without a PGCE. You could confidently teach both maths and science, both useful subjects.
I've just googled 'science technician Birmingham' and a lot of things popped up, including at least half a dozen current vacancies for lab/tech assistants in schools, which again would be valuable experience.

Thank you for the advice. I'll check those out next week including the careers service.
