Do you get benefits if you leave your job?

Hello all.

I am hoping someone can cofirm for me that if you leave your job - not by your employer firing you, just you deciding to leave without having another job to go to - will you be entitled to any help in the form of temporary benefits whilst you look for work?

Before anyone jumps on me, please know that I am asking this question and only considering it as the last possible measure. I am absolutely in tears and am applying for every job I can!!!

I want to find another one quickly because my probation period is over soon and that means that I will have to give 1 months notice if I want to leave my job, which I feel may hamper my chances with some prospective employers as I understand most people only have to give 2 weeks??

Thank you.

It depends why you left. You can be sanctioned for up to 6 months.

It's a very risky thing to do. It's better if you could get a temporary job first. Remember, you only need to tell them why you left your last job.

The amount of notice people have to give depends to a great extent on the level of the job and the employer.

Registering with an agency for temporary work is an option. They will know whether they are likely to have work available in the summer - when people may need cover for staff on holiday but university students are also free to take up opportunities, there's a balance to think about there and it does depend on what sort of work you would do.
  • Ah but what happens if you don't 'pass probation' with it being extended say? do you then get to enjoy the 'terms' before you've passed? as it were (worst case and all that..)

Sorry to stick my nose in but it seems a valid question relevant to the thread some what, what happens in these situations of not considered passed?

I can't be doing with boring you all with my thread! does anyone know? :) sorry to hijack

I know it is really 2 years non protection but my employer works on a trust rating/strict 3 months stage must pass probation then you get another fuller official contract and 1 months notice for example but some of haven't passed probation

Thanks to all who have replied. I already know that I have to stay before finding work elsewhere. I don't even know why I asked this question. I guess I really needed to vent somehow. Sorry if that makes you feel like you wasted time in answering me. :(

I am leaving for various reasons. I don't want to actually say why because I am paranoid some of my co-workers or even managers might somehow be on this forum. (Small chance, but...)

Deleted User - Seeing as my employers just offered me further training in a more senior aspect of work there, and have told me how good of a worker I am (I don't mean to sound big-headed here!!) I have no reason to think that I wouldn't pass the probationary period.

Thanks Stormy. My reason for wanting to leave is the same. I often have chest pains which my GP told me was from stress and now have an ulcer too. I can't wait to leave my job. Yesterday my co-worker and good friend gave in her notice without even having another job lined up yet - it's how bad the atmosphere is at our workplace. There are just so many problems. I'm so unhappy...

If you have been employed for over 3 months and leave your job or get sacked, YOU WILL NOT BE ENTITLED TO ANY BENEFITS FOR POSSIBLY UP TO 6 MONTHS.

If you start work for at least 4 weeks but no more than 12 weeks, you can leave then as this is classed as a trial period and you can get benefits. I was told this when i signed on last week.

Call in at your local jobcentre and explain your situation and see what they say.

The workforce needs to get organised, join a trade union. No-one should become like this as a result of going to work, bit the problems are unlikely to solve themselves.

Running away is not always the answer. What will you do if you next job and the one after that turns out the same?

Unless of course you think you might have a valid reason for leaving your job. Any decision will be judged by an independent adjudicating officer who will examine all the facts.

You must work at the same place as I do!!

My OH recently left (same company as me) as he was having similar problems and management just weren't interested at all. Since he left, 2 others in his team of 6 have gone sick. He didn't have a job to go to but it just wasn't worth his mental health to stay.

We are in a fortunate position where I earn enough (just) to keep us both.

    Good luck!
