Do mortgage lenders write to your employer?

I'm in the process of being assessed for a mortgage from a couple of providers and was wondering whether anyone knows if the major banks communicate with your employer to check any details you have given them?

I have had a major issue at work involving remuneration, non-payment of commission, sales credits etc and while so far nothing has changed my line manager has made it perfectly clear that given the opportunity he will make matters difficult for me.

Any advice greatly received.

Some may, but it would go to their HR department rather than your line manager.

Some lenders may just want payslips and/or P60, others may want to write to your employer. If you only need your basic pay to be taken into account then its unlikely they will want to write to your employer.

Some contact your employer and speak to the HR department and some even give HR a questionnaire to fill in.

Regardless of what the lender might do....The questions remain.....are you sure you can afford the repayments should your employer never pay what you think they owe you??
Would you resign if the dispute wasnt settled to your satisfaction? How "safe" is your income stream?
    etc etc

  • Thanks all.

Its a very small company (team of 6) so no HR department and any communication would definitely go to him.

It is only basic pay that is being taken into account though the manager has threatened to try and claw some of that back because of previous sales that have not panned out - although he has no legal ability to do so because my basic is not performance linked, but that doesn't stop him threatening! All a bit messy.....

Affordability isn't an issue as its just a remortgage, possibly with the same lender, and so even without current role the mortgage is easily affordable.

I just want to avoid a potentially messy (and maybe legal!) situation at work being exacerbated, and equally don't want the mortgage provider to assume something dodgy is going on.

If its the same lender they will not write to your employer.

If its a new lender its unlikely they will write to your employer assuming you have been there a while.

On a previous application Chelsea Building Society carried out the work check by simply calling me at work. That and my payslips sufficed.
