Parking 'fine'

Hi

I'm a real newbie to this and need help!!
I've read some of the posts regarding the subject of PCN as today 20/5/14 I have received one. I have never had one before so find it quite scary :(

I recently met up with a friend, who I hadn't seen for 3 months, at my local retail park. I was a little early so decided to look round one of the stores until she arrived. I did make a purchase and have the receipt. When she arrived we went into Costa coffee for food and drinks, of which she paid. I did use my Costa points card and have proof of the visit (along with lots of other visits there recently as its my local :)) After we left there I went back into one other store whilst I waited for my daughter who arrived some ten minutes later and then we left. Had I known that I was being timed I certainly wouldn't have hung around. The retail park has been there for several years with bigger retailers coming in all the time and so I have visited many times but cannot remember ever having to check the times 'allowed' for parking there, and I don't know anyone who regularly stands and reads the notice boards as parking there has always been free.

Today I received the PCN from Parking eye which stated I was 33 minutes over the 'allowed' time period and was issued on 16/5/14 and if I pay it by the 30/5/14 it will be reduced from £85 to £50. This has turned out to be a very expensive coffee and has put me off going there at the moment. :(

If I appeal it would probably take me over the 30/5/14 and I'm worried I'll have to pay the full amount.
Any advice on how to deal with this is gratefully accepted as the thought of courts, bailiffs etc is very scary, especially as I was only having coffee!
