OP, the scheme is referred to as 'Rent-A-Roof and there are hundreds of posts of this subject.
As stated above, the downside is firstly that it might make selling your property more difficult; I certainly wouldn't buy a house with a company having a 25 year lease(for any reason) on my property. IMO it would deter more people than it would attract.
Whilst the ASG agreement(lease)doubtless conforms with the guidelines for mortgage companies, there are plenty of reports that the lease for these panels(not just ASG) has caused problems when people want a mortgage.
Secondly you need to read up on the possible/probable savings of these systems in independent publications - WHICH etc. 35% savings seems to be quoted a lot, but 35% of what consumption?
If you have gas/oil CH and use the 'free' electricity to heat water, then your savings must be calculated at the unit cost of that gas/oil(taking into account boiler efficiency)
Electricity tariffs used to have 2 tiers and companies would often use the higher Tier 1 rate as the basis for calculating savings. Bear in mind that all new tariffs have a Daily Standing Charge(DSC) and a single unit(kWh) rate. With the DSC unit rates are actually lower in many cases than a couple of years ago; and thus savings are lower.0 -
Someone once described the deal as being akin to the offer of a free 28" CRT tv in 2000 on the condition that you don't upgrade until 2025. Rather far fetched , but it does illustrate the possibility of being stuck with old technology.
Poor analogy.
Better one might be someone provides you with a free shed for your garden but you can only make use of half of it for 25 years.0
