can't access the internet

Can you help guys.

I have a wireless router and can't connect with my laptop. The desktop is fine so can assume that the router and adsl connection are fine.

I've tried to connect over WLAN and cable but neither work. It says that the connection has limited or no connectivity. If I click repair, it can't renew my ip address.

I'm running xp home

Thanks

Hmm how strange that one machine works wireless, but another wont work even wired!

The limited connectivity thing is definitely an IP address issue.

The one BIG thing I would check is taht no static ip address is set on the laptop :s

Go start > control panel > network connections

Right mouse click you on your network connection and click properties.

Highlight TCP/IP settings and click advanced.

make sure everything set to "obtain automatically".

I'm assuming your Desktop is using DHCP? On the desktop click Start > run
    type in :
    cmd

Press enter. Type in the new window:
    ipconfig /all
press enter. There will be something that says:
    DHCP Enabled? Yes/No

Tell us which it is :)

Did you set up the network yourself? :) thanks.

This happened to me a lot when i first set the bleedin' router up. Unplug the modem and router, wait 5 mins and reboot your computer. you may have to do it a few times but it always fixes it for me, the inbuilt repair thing has never worked yet.

I think I've sorted it now. I don't think I'd deleted Mcafee properly. I've done that now and loaded AVG
