dependants and mortgage application

Hello,

I have a question about whether a step child is classed as a dependant when applying for a mortgage.

We are not first time buyers and my husband already has a mortgage. We cannot apply jointly as my credit rating is poor and unfortunately I have been stuck on my ex's mortgage for the last 7 years. I have a son, which I intermittently receive maintenance for and I also work so am able to support him completely financially.

I have searched the web for an answer but there seems to be no information about this. I was wondering if anyone is able to give some advice. Obviously with the new rules on mortgage lending dependants seem to make a huge difference to what the bank will lend.

many thanks

The child is dependent if he lives with you.

If he lives with you and cannot support himself (you don't mention an age) then yes, he is a dependant.
