Dislocated Knee

Options
Hi all

I had a run in with a dog on a beach on Thursday night ( )and ended up dislocating both my knees. Luckily one just kinda popped in and out so is only in a bandage; however the other one was bad and involved an ambulance and plenty on Morphine to get it back in! Have it strapped in a splint for an undisclosed amount of time.

I'm not looking for medical advice, just wondered if anyone knows how long it may take till I can walk properly again?! Am going on a camping holiday to Scotland in 6 weeks so am trying to figure out if it worth me going or not.

I have a niece that has this problem ongoing, her knee pops out at the slightest thing she usually ends up on crutches and strapping for anything up to 3mths. I guess that as yours is a first time dislocation it might be ok after a few weeks rest but the best person to ask is the Doc...

would suggest you get yourself on the physio list sharpish.

I had this (also caused by playing with the dog!), was driven to A&E. Seen, drugged, discharged with crutches and a physio referral. Stopped physio after a few weeks because it seemed to be getting better - 10 years on, the knee's still not really stable & hurts like billy-o in inclement weather. Wished I'd carried on now!

Sorry :o to answer your orignial question, 6 weeks sounds like just about ok to manage around, but the ligaments take longer to heal than bones, and I was down to one crutch at 6 weeks.

    Thanks guys
We have decided not to go to Scotland. It would be too much walking so close to doing this - shame tho, I've always wanted to go to Scotland and was so excited.

Oh, and yes... the dog was fine!

Been to the fracture clinic and am being refered to a knee specialist as I need an operation on one, possibly both, of my knees

They want to tighten the muscles and tendons around the knee cap to make sure it stays put in future. Anyone had this done?

Also, to anyone that has dislocated their knees..... how long does it hurt for?!?! Its been 11 days now and it still hurts to walk and both knees make horrible clicking noises sometimes and feel like they are going to give way :mad::o

My step father thinks I should sue my friend!! :rotfl:

I know a friend who's had ops on his knees which sound similar, but I stopped listening when he started describing where the screws went ... of course it could be something completely different, before you panic, he had a congenital problem which was brought to a head by a game of football.

Can't help with how long it will hurt for: maybe you need to see your GP?

i dislocated my knee 10 years ago, my leg seemed to split in half, it popped back in on its own but so so painful afterwards. couldnt sleep with it, started with panic attacks etc. My doc said it would take 2 weeks, i couldn't walk on it properly for 6 months or so. I had to have physio, and ultrasound treatment on it. Its left me with arthritis and really painful on cold days. even now i dont feel secure with my knees, i take extra care with them, and try not to do things that will cause it to happen again. had a few minor pop outs since, but nothing too major (pain for a couple of days but nothing like the scale of the first time)

a good exercise is to - sit on a chair or at the top of the bed, legs out in front of you. turn your foot to the side, like you're kicking a football, and then slowly lift and lower your leg. this works the muscles on your thigh. Another good one is, if you feel your knee tightening up, lean against a wall, both hands flat, stretch your leg behind you (on your toes) and then lower your heel to the floor. it stretches all the muscles around the knee and stops them feeling tight for a few hours.

good luck! i hope you have more luck than I did with it. it does get better, it just takes time. its just hard to heal as its one of the parts of the body you have to use everyday :o

I would ask to see a physio for advice about looking after your calf and thigh muscles until your knee is better - skeletons often react to injury/pain in one joint with problems in the next bit along.
