Two UTR numbers

I was just about to send off my tax return for 2013/14 and I noticed the UTR didn't seem to match a letter I get from HMRC a few days previous. So I rang them up and apparently I have two UTRs for some reason. I was told they would send me a letter in four weeks or so, to explain which one I should use. So now I can't fill in my tax return until this is sorted, which is a bit frustrating since I wanted to get this out of the way.

I was thinking what would happen if I tried to register online with the new UTR which I think is the correct one and filled the form in again and submitted it. Or should I wait for maybe four weeks to see if they can sort it out.

Do not submit until you are sure which number is retained. If you think that HMRC won't further mess this up and issue late filing penalties on the UTR that you decide not to use - think again!

    From experience ....
There are 10 types of people in the world - those who understand binary and those who do not.
  • Agreed. Just hold off until they explain. You can have 2 UTR Numbers for a number of reasons such as bankruptcy etc
And if you put it under the wrong reference or both HMRC will definetly want the tax on both.
