Money back on travel when event cancelled. Can anyone advise?

Hi,
My son and I were all set to go to a charity football match in Bolton tomorrow. I received an e-mail this morning to sat that the unfortunately the event has been cancelled. The facility to get the money back on the actual tickets is easy (although as it was a charity game I would have happily let them keep this), but I would like to know of a way of getting my train fare back. The train ticket is non-refundable and although they were very polite, they basically told me rules are rules. The football club say that it is the charity's fault and so they will not help. The charity statement seem to blame the football club, but I am awaiting an email from them (I'm guessing being a charity they will not be in a position to help anyway - I would feel a bit odd taking money from a charity too). I guess I am answering my own question, but if anyone out there knows of a way of getting a refund from somewhere I would be eternally grateful! :A

If it's an Advance fare, no refund applies. If you have travel insurance, contact your insurer.
If they are not Advance tickets, a refund would usually be applicable, subject to a £10 admin fee.0 -
Hi,
As Yorkie2 has stated advance fares are not refundable
Can you not have the refund for the game tickets, take the money for the train tickets and then donate back the rest?
xxThanks to money saving tips and debt repayments/becoming debt free I have been able to work and travel for the last 4 years visiting 12 countries and working within 3 of them. Currently living and working in Canada  :dance:0 -
If you're going that way some other time in the future, you could amend your tickets (subject to paying the admin fee and any difference in fare). Sadly, as mentioned above, advance tickets are not usually refundable unless booked through a specific promotion (I think the Southern "Rainy Day Guarantee" lets you cancel).0

It also applies to walk-up tickets with any operator... providing they've not yet been collected.
Unfortunately the original post, despite containing a lot of words, doesn't contain any of the required information to give accurate advice. So we don't know the ticket type, date & time of travel, price, where the tickets were bought, etc and without that, we can't really say.0
