The solicitors down the road was replacing the carpet. there was loads of the old stuff in the skip outside. I sent my oh under cover of darkness. It was good carpet, scotchguarded too and lasted us a good few years.Anyone who lives within their means suffers from a lack of imagination:beer:

I once saw an entire comic book collection in a paper recycling open skip at the council tip. I reached in to grab some and they came over and stopped me, citing 'elf and safety... I bet I could have got a pretty penny for them on eBay. I was so annoyed! lolKavanne

I wonder if those workes at the tip rifle through stuff, i often say to my OH the tresures they must see....lucky gits0

I rarely rifle through skips (although it has been known). But I am fortunate to have very wasteful neighbours, so almost every large item in my house I got for free.
I also get asked to clear the odd shed, or garage, in the course of my work. They can be a treasure trove and I often suggest that the owner could sell a particulary valuable item, but they never seem bothered, so I benefit.
My best find so far, is a pretty new Hitachi combined video, DVD recorder, which the owner said "it's dead, scrap it". One new fuse in the plug later, it's installed happily in my living room.
I feel that making, finding and repairing items, is so much more satisfying than buying new.0 -
ive must admit i have never had the nerve to skip dive but my dh has one of the worshops next to where he works had thrown out some filling cabinets and he retrieved them for our garage ,
i have just redecorated my dining room the table and chairs i had from freecycle ,my fire ,surround, and hearth i had from my mil when she removed them from her house ,and my sideboard i had from dh's gran when she was having a clearout ,the wallpaper was a £1 aroll from our local focus when it was closing down . so doing the whole room cost me about £12 to do0 -
I always take the view that anything I put out is there for anyone to help themselves to if they want - it would be nice to be asked sometimes though:cool:. I have only ever been asked twice - once by some kids wanting something (which I agreed to) and once by a neighbour (he should have known better than to ask - as I knew he didnt like me;)).
In reverse - if I see something chucked out that I want I dont think twice about "saving it from the dump".
As long as one exercises a bit of caution about what one takes then why not do so?- thinking of that carpet with free moths thrown in:eek: - and I wouldnt take any wooden furniture from a "suspect" home these days (as I gather bedbugs have come back to this country - and I'd rather not prove that fact for myself:eek:).
Doesnt bother me giving everyone a laugh about "what HAS ceridwen picked up THIS time?".0
