Advice re:Greeenwich and travelling around

Hi, going for the second time in 2 years to London. Loved the experience so much last time we thought we would take in the Emirates Airline and the Royal Observatory if possible.

Even more touristy would be a river boat trip from Westminster to Greenwich.

But to be honest Im a bit confused with the distances, we have all day but Im not sure if its possible as there seems to be 2 piers at Greeenwich and the observatory and airline arent near each other.

Any one have a idea if it can be done with the minimum of fuss, we have oyster cards from last year so thats not a problem.

Thanks in advance. :T
Old Faithful we roam the range together,
Old Faithful in any kind of weather,
When the round up days are over,
And the Boulevard’s white with clover,
For you old faithful pal of mine.

For the Observatory get off the boat at Greenwich Pier and walk up the hill. About a mile. You can get a bus part of the way but it's almost as quick to walk

When you are done walk down again and get the boat on to the North Greenwich O2 pier which is near the Emirates. Or take the DLR/tube. The other side of the river you can get the DLR or DLR/tube back into town

Your Oyster can be used to pay for the lot (certainly if you use the Thames Clipper - not sure about the tour boats)

If you play around with the map on the Observatory website you can get an idea of geography and work out other permutations

Certainly easily achievable in a day

It should be possible to do the Observatory, cable car and a boat trip in the same day. The cable car is outside of Greenwich town centre near the O2 arena, your nearest tube stop is North Greenwich on the Jubilee line. If you're coming from central London I would get the tube there first, do the cable car, then walk along the Thames Path into Greenwich town centre (about 15 minute walk) as this will take you through the Naval College and past some of the historic riverfront pubs. You can also get bus 188 from North Greenwich to the town centre (about 5 minutes bus ride).

I would then explore the town centre and the observatory, and then get the boat back - the pier is next to the Cutty Sark. It should be eminently doable in one day, and there's plenty to see and enjoy there!

As you'll possibly be making several journeys by river, it's worth looking into buying the Thames Clipper River Roamer tickets (£16.50) that give you unlimited travel between 9am and 9pm, rather than buying singles - especially good value if you have train tickets and can use the 2-4-1 offer

It takes about an hour from Westminster to North Greenwich (the O2) and with a river roamer they'll happily let you just stay on the boat - we spent a rather wet 4 hours recently just going up and down the river a couple of times - great fun ! (and after 5pm on weekdays the route is extended downstream through the Thames Barrier to Woolwich)
  • Bit 'off topic' but if you get the time for brunch or afternoon tea there is a beautiful little cafe called Royal Teas in a pretty area of Greenwich (close to station) that is worth a visit. Delicious fresh food and excellent value. I don't work for them or know them, just happened across them one day and was impressed :)

From Greenwich you can walk UNDER the Thames to Island gardens then get dlr to Canning Town and Jubilee Line to North Greenwich for Emirates. Oyster gets you a discount on Emirates.

Took our nephew to London last summer, we did the Red Rover tour with City Cruises from Westminster to Greenwich, lunch in Greenwich, walked up to the observatory and then back again. got your tickets with a 50% off offer at the time was a glorious sunny day, unofficial commentary on the boat was good too

Took us a day but didn't start out until lunchtime on the cruise and took everything at a leisurely pace.

Here's a top to straddle the date line for free too
