I want to sell on ebay BUT

The but is, the fee's, ebay insertion, final value and the various postage charges by the post office or other courier, how do people make money?.
Yes I know once we get a reasonable volume we can get cheaper product, postage etc, but we need to get there first. Is it normal to get by on a profit of £1 or less per item, as myself and a friend have being calculating the basic fees and do not know how some of the companies and individuals out there are actually making a living wage, let alone pay for an industrial unit etc as some are.
Is there anyone who can unravel this mystery, so that I can make a income from selling on ebay?
Thanks
Michael

You need to work out if its worth £1 to you
if not. dont bother, find another line/source at cheaper price0 -
The postage is billed on top of the final sale price, unless you specify Free Postage in your listing.
Calculate in advance the weight and size of what you're selling, and charge postage appropriate to this. Then you just need to worry about eBay and Paypal fees.0 -

Rather than concentrate on goods that are likely to only make £1 profit (is that before or after tax?) find goods with a better mark up.
Personally I sell a range of goods, some with a very nice mark up indeed, but I do also sell a few much smaller items alongside , I consider those my bread and butter goods. Things that can't break, are not in a category likely to attract scams, can be posted with no fuss but make me around £1.50 profit (before tax). A few of those every day mean a steady little income to boost the larger sales and keep my numbers high enough to stay a TRS, yet take virtually no time at all to pack.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards.
