Thanks to all who replied but this thread has gone off-tangent and I'd prefer to just leave this forum now.

From a banks point of view emigration means it will be difficult for them to enforce anything if you leave the country as they won't be able to do anything through the Uk courts.
As you have a while, should be able to save up quite a bit in that time?0 -
With no security, no lender will provide a loan to 'emigrate' especially if it will not be repaid before you go. However, your US Visa will give you right of entry but not one of residency, and the issuing of a green card and SSN (without which, you'd be working illegally).
If you cannot self-fund, you may find your plans will not come to fruition as I know AIB for one would not accept this as a suitable reason due to the possibility of skipping repayment.0 -

Thanks for your reply. I would of course keep up with my repayments while I'm away for the year working. What with finishing the dissertation and only being able to work part-time, I wouldn't be able to save the amount I want and I'd like to get away as soon as possible once I've finished up.0 -

Regarding visas: it's a 1-year work scheme only eligible for PG's where I'd be doing a job in relation to my field. Won't be working illegally and would pay all instalments as I'll be back in Ireland in 12 months. But I can see a bank not exactly finding that very reassuring!0 -

Thanks but I would intend on paying all instalments as I'll be back home after 12 months.0 -
you maybe want to amend the first post.
To emigrate means you are moving abroad with no plan to return...one-way ticket etc
You are actually going to be working abroad for 12 months
not that it is likely to make getting a loan much easier, but it is certainly better than saying you want money to emigrate0 -
Do you have a job arranged? £6000 is not going to last long in NYC without one.0

With overdrafts utilised, you may find lenders rather unsympathetic to your request. In the new sawn of responsible and affordable lending.0
