Credit card after backruptcy

I was bankrupt in 2010 which ended in 2011. so I apparently have 2 years of it left on my credit history. I want to improve my credit rating but I couldn't even get a Santander bank account recently so doubt I'll get a credit card.

Any ideas on how I can go about improving this now?

Have you cleaned up your credit files (see sticky at the top of this forum)? As this will make things a little bit easier.

Most banks will only give you a basic account (i.e. no cheque book or overdraft facility) until the BR drops off your credit file.

For the credit card try Vanquis as they are probably the easiest to get but do pay off in full every month - at an average interest rate of 40% they are expensive otherwise.

Try Capital one, they gave us one about 2 years ago (4 years after we went BR) but only gave me a £200 limit which they still won't up. Otherwise you could go for a pre paid card with someone like cashplus, that's what I did when I went BR and just paid into it each month so I could purchase stuff online.
Life is like a game of Snakes & Ladders, i almost made it to the top but now i'm at the bottom again and its a very long ladder to the top. I had it all and now its gone
Well my 6 years are now up, now to start to rebuild my life again

  • Try to get a catalogue account and pay off in full each month, this is how I built up my credit rating. A couple of years of these little green dots on your file will go a long way in improving your credit.

Have a go for the Next Directory first, I know it's not ideal but (I think) their APR still works out cheaper than any of the sub-prime credit card rates.

    Worth a shot! HTH!
