Using up skimmed milk powder

I love milk, and have been on Skimmed milk since Jan for health reasons. It's okay---just! Milk is also getting to be expensive. As there's only one of me here, I don't buy more than the litre bottles as I have a thing about milk going off, once it has been opened.

Anyway, found a container of Waitrose Skimmed Milk powder in the cupboard which I must have bought last year, so thought I would use this up and not waste it.

Made up half a pint as recommended (2 1/2 tbs per half pint water) and stirred well, and let it in the fridge. Was pleasantly surprised to find that although it contains less than 1% fat, it is 'creamier' than the fresh skimmed milk, and perfectly okay either cold or added to tea/coffee.

Looks as though I shan't have to buy fresh milk for a while until this dried milk has been used up, and if it works out cheaper, I may just stick with it for the moment.

    i love skimmed milk its the only one i can drink now, but I must say in some recipes it just doesnt work quite as well- for example white sauces.

    Ive been known to stir a teaspoon of milk powder into sk milk to thicken it a bit before using in sauces ;)

    Also, vital bit of kit for anyone with a breadmaker :D

    i use milk powder to make up white sauces with no problems. i also use it for making up custard so we dont use up the "proper" milk. I also use it in the bread maker :)

    Me too. I also add a tablespoon when making yoghurt.

    I've suspiciously eyed-up milk powder a few times, but never actually used it. Does it dissolve completely, or do you still get powdery bits in it?

    Can't be doing with skimmed milk myself - nowt but coloured water IMO. ;)
    I buy whole milk and water it down so it goes twice as far.

    i only buy it for the breadmaker, but it comes in handy when your running low on normal milk.

    i wouldnt have powdered milk on cereals!

    Hi.

    The pwder dissolves completely if you stir well.

    Watering down full-cream milk is something I wondered about. I have to keep to a low-fat regime so would this work for me?

    I buy full fat milk & halve it into another empty milk container. I then mix up skim milk powder & add in. Shake it up. Makes milk go so much further and nobody knows the difference. I can then freeze it.
    Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia. ;)

    I do that sometimes too ;)

    Be aware that some brands of skimmed milk powder contain ingredients other than milk and vitamins. The vitamins are reintroduced because they are lost in the drying process. I've found the Tesco value brand to be the purest ;)

    I use it in hm yogurt. Half a cup (about 2 oz) to 1 litre of liquid milk. It increases the concentration of the milk; making it creamier.

    I use it in baking where liquid milk is called for.

    You can use it to make your own dry baking mixes.
