travel insurance claim help

HI
We have holiday booed for September to Thailand, so fare we have paid deposit + exrtra to pre book seats. The balance is due begining of June.
Hubby currently undergoing investigations for a bowel problem.
If we cancel now will be classed as inclination not to travel and ins wont pay out.
If we pay balance and further treatment needed causing to be unable to travel they are saying that we knew about condition and should not have paid balance.
So stuck between a rock and a hard place and could be liable to lose in excess of £3000.
comments or help please.

You don't say whether you knew of the illness when you took out the cover. If you did then the insurer may be in a position to cancel the cover.
If you did not then I suggest you write to the insurer and explain, saying that, unless you hear to the contrary from them, you will go ahead. They can then either ask you to cancel the trip - in which case they should refund the policy less the excess - or confirm that you can go ahead.
When you write the letter, keep a copy and get proof of posting (free from the Post Office). Although some people advocate Recorded Delivery, there is an additional cost and frequently no signature is obtained anyway - so if the insurer then loses it, they have "proof" that they never received it. By contrast, if push comes to shove the Financial Ombudsman will accept proof of posting as evidence that, on the balance of probability, it was received.0
