Sat Nav for UK and USA

Options
I work in the UK and the States and would like to buy a Sat Nav unit that has street level mapping for both (plus Western Europe if possible). Is the Tomtom 910 my only option? The reviews I've seen are fairly mixed.

Anyone in love with their 910? Or can anyone recommend an alternative?

Many thanks in advance.

Would agree the 910 is a great piece of kit. Plus you should get some good prices on it at present as the new version are out in the Autumn I believe.

Tom tom all the way, I used mine over in the US a few years ago and will be useing it again this coming september. I use a PDA witha bluetooth gps receiver and tom tom installed. it may be a cheaper option for you if you already have a PDA. a lot of mobile phones can also run tom tom.

Have a look at the Garmin NUVI 270, 370 or 670, much neater than the Tomtom 910.

Or if you don't want to spend too much, look at an older Garmin unit as well. I've got a 2610 (as it's waterproof enough to also be used on a motorbike) that I use both in the US and in Europe and it works fine.

The one thing you should also consider IMHO is the cost of maps and mapping updates - I must admit that I don't have much of an idea how much the maps for TomTom are but if you're planning on keeping the unit for a few years, the yearly "map tax" can add up to a significant amount of money.

To give you an example, I bought my 2610 (used) with the European maps, which is the standard config over here. I then bought the US maps off an ebay seller in the US for approx USD120. Haven't had to update those yet but I've had to update the European maps and that update cost me USD75 + UK VAT.

Of course you can run the GPS with older maps as well but I don't really see the point in that if I was street address level navigation. The Mews I live in, despite being around for a good twenty years now, has only been added to the Garmin maps a revision or two back...

Just to make you aware, in case you didn't know... it's illegal in some states to attach anything to the windscreen (including Calfornia). This includes anything with a sucker!
